Before you go
Culture
Klungkung was the last kingdom to resist Dutch colonization, culminating in the 1908 Puputan. The Puputan Monument in the town center commemorates this event. The town retains deep cultural and artistic significance as the former seat of the Majapahit-influenced royal court.
Money
Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) is the local currency. ATMs are available in Klungkung town center. Carry cash for temples and smaller establishments, as card payments are not universally accepted.
Transport
Klungkung lies on the main road between Ubud (25 km northwest) and the east coast (Padang Bai, Candidasa). Scooter rental is the most flexible way to visit; taxis are also readily available.
Weather
East Bali is typically drier than the west. The dry season (April–October) is the best time to visit. Rain showers can occur in the wet season (November–March) but usually do not disrupt travel significantly.
