Why Go?
Padang Bai is a small port town in East Bali that serves as the main ferry gateway to Lombok and the Gili Islands, but it rewards travelers who linger. The town has a charming, laid-back atmosphere with good snorkeling in the bay, excellent diving operators, and two beautiful beaches: Bias Tugal (White Sand Beach) and Blue Lagoon Beach. Accommodation leans budget-friendly with guesthouses and homestays, making it ideal for backpackers seeking a quieter Bali experience without the crowds of Kuta or Seminyak.

Getting In
Perama is the national tour bus company serving Padang Bai, with shuttle buses from Kuta, Sanur, Ubud, Candidasa, and Lovina. The Perama office is located at Dona Restaurant on Jl Deportiva near the jetty, and you should reserve one day in advance with a minimum of 2 persons. Ferries run from Padang Bai harbor to Lembar on Lombok, while Gili Cat and Perama operate boat services directly to the Gili Islands. The harbor is the main arrival point for those continuing east to Lombok.

For exploring surrounding East Bali attractions, motorbike and car rentals are widely available. Popular day trip destinations include Candidasa, Tirta Gangga, Taman Ujung (Edge Sukasada Park), and Lempuyang Temple for sunset views.

Food and Drink
Padang Bai restaurants feature good-priced seafood and standard traveler fare. For local Indonesian food, Martini's Warung in the main square (open 6AM-11PM) is a budget favorite where Martini herself often cooks; Mie Goreng comes highly recommended. Omang Omang Cafe serves Western and Indonesian cuisine with a good BBQ selection and organic ingredients. Cafe Kerti offers views from its second floor, while Puri Rai Restaurant serves fresh local seafood. Along the beach road are several reggae bars including Babylon and Kinky Reggae Bar, plus Ozone Cafe known for pizzas and information swapping with fellow travelers.

Things to Do
Ocean activities dominate the to-do list. Snorkeling is good in the main bay, but Blue Lagoon Beach offers even better underwater visibility with clownfish and coral reefs accessible via a coral-less canal on the far left side. Bias Tugal Beach (White Sand Beach) is the best beach in Padang Bai for swimming, with about five warungs serving simple Indonesian dishes and Mount Agung visible in the distance. Dive operators line Jl Pantai Silayukti, including Absolute Scuba (PADI and SSI courses), Geko Dive Bali (five-star PADI resort, US$100 for 2 dives), and Water Worxx Dive Center Bali. For land activities, visit Pura Silayukti, an 11th-century temple that was once home to the Hindu sage Empu Kuturan. Spiral Spa @ Bloo offers massages and body treatments.

Safety
Exercise caution with aggressive porters at the ferry dock who may demand excessive payments—do not allow anyone else to handle your luggage. There have been reports of local taxi drivers and touts becoming extremely aggressive and threatening violence when they learn travelers intend to use Uber, Grab, or Go-Jek taxi apps. Some incidents involve locals ganging together, opening car doors, shouting, and dragging bags out of vehicles. This behavior is extremely intimidating, so be prepared for confrontations if using ride-hailing apps.
