Before you go

Connectivity

Mobile network coverage is patchy, especially deeper in the forest. Inform your lodge of your trekking plans and expected return time. WiFi is typically limited to lodge common areas.

Health

Malaria precautions are recommended despite lower risk inside dense forest. Use repellent, sleep under a net, and consult your doctor about prophylaxis. Leeches and mosquitoes are present during wet seasons. Tap water is not safe to drink.

Money

Cash in Ugandan shillings is essential for park visits, markets, and village shops. ATMs are available in Fort Portal and Kamwenge but not near the park. Credit cards are accepted at some upmarket lodges only.

Safety

Always follow ranger instructions during wildlife encounters. Keep at least 7 metres from chimpanzees. Do not wander off marked trails. Wear sturdy boots, use sunscreen, and carry 1-2 litres of water for hikes.

Transport

Public transport does not run into Kibale Forest. Buses stop in Fort Portal, Bigodi, Kamwenge, and Kasese; from there, hire a taxi, boda-boda, or private driver. A 4x4 vehicle is strongly recommended, especially during rainy seasons (March-May and September-November).

Weather

Kibale has a humid, mild climate year-round with average highs of 27°C and lows of 15°C. Rain can fall any time; June-July and December-February are relatively drier. Bring waterproof clothing regardless of season.
