Why Go

Fort Portal sits at the edge of Uganda's equatorial rainforest in Western Uganda's Kabarole District, making it an ideal base for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts. The town is famous for its tea plantations and serves as the gateway to both Kibale Forest (known for chimpanzee tracking) and Queen Elizabeth National Park, which boasts nearly 100 mammal species and 606 bird species. As of July 2023, the Link Bus ticket from Kampala costs USh 40,000. Link buses depart from near the new Taxi Park in Kampala when full. The first Link bus heading to Kasese leaves Fort Portal at 10AM, with tickets costing USh 5,000. Local vans to Kasese depart from around 7AM and cost USh 6,000. Getting Around

Fort Portal is a compact town easily navigable on foot. For longer distances, boda boda (motorcycle taxis) are plentiful throughout town, charging approximately USh 1,000 for journeys of 2-3 km. Travelers should note that boda bodas drive fast and safety standards vary; there are limited medical facilities nearby in case of accidents. Private hire taxis can be found at the main roundabout in the town centre for those preferring four-wheel transport.

When To Go

Fort Portal's high location provides a cooler climate than much of Uganda, making it pleasant year-round. The dry seasons (December to February and June to August) are ideal for wildlife viewing in Queen Elizabeth National Park. The equatorial rainforest of Kibale Forest offers good chimpanzee tracking opportunities throughout the year, though trails may be muddier during wet seasons. Tea plantations can be visited anytime, with harvest seasons varying.

Food And Drink

The town offers a mix of international and local dining options. Local restaurants are significantly cheaper but expect longer wait times, as food preparation in Uganda takes time—30 minutes for simple dishes is not unusual.

Things To Do

Queen Elizabeth National Park is less than an hour's drive from Fort Portal toward Mbarara, offering remarkable biodiversity including hippos (the Kazinga Channel has the world's largest concentration), elephants, leopards, and 606 bird species. The park also features volcanic craters, grassy plains, and tropical forest. Tooro Botanical Gardens, established in 2001, have restored 100 acres of native species and offer guided tours for USh 20,000. Golf enthusiasts can enjoy the town's course for USh 30,000 entrance. Buy

Fort Portal is renowned for its high-grown, high-quality tea produced in the surrounding tea plantations, benefiting from the area's cool climate that ensures slow plant growth. Visitors can purchase locally-grown tea from any shop or, better yet, tour the tea plantations directly. Kabarole Tours and Safari on Molidina Street offers crater lake tours, safaris to Queen Elizabeth National Park, and chimp and gorilla tracking permit arrangements. Nature and Wildlife Tours, located 8 km from Fort Portal on the Fort Portal-Mbarara Road, provides similar tour services.

Safety

Boda boda motorbike taxis are a primary transport option but drive fast with limited safety standards; there are no good hospitals nearby in case of accidents. General petty crime such as pickpocketing is possible in crowded areas. When visiting national parks and forests, use reputable tour operators and follow park guidelines. Night travel outside the town center is not recommended.
