Overview

K'gari (pronounced "Gurri") is the world's largest sand island and a UNESCO World Heritage Site inscribed in 1992. It offers a unique landscape where ancient rainforests grow on sand dunes at elevations over 200 metres, surrounded by over 100 freshwater lakes with white sandy beaches.

Before you go

Money

Prices are substantially higher on the island than on the mainland. Bring supplies or budget extra for food and drinks. Alcohol unavailable before 10 AM.

Packing

Bring all food supplies unless staying at resorts. Water is available from campsite taps and 500m north of Eurong. Camping gear available for hire with vehicles.

Safety

Do not approach or feed dingoes—they can be aggressive. Ocean swimming dangerous due to sharks. Use sun protection; skin can burn in minutes even on cloudy days.

Transport

Access by ferry from River Heads or Urangan Boat Harbour near Hervey Bay. Rent a 4WD to explore—the island is too large for walking. Speed limit 80 km/h on beach, 30 km/h on sand tracks.

Weather

Hot and humid climate with sea breezes. Winters mild (15°C average) and dry—ideal time to visit. Spring/summer has wildflower displays.
