Overview
Kengtung is an isolated town in Shan State that has only recently opened to foreigners after the ceasefire between rebels and the government. Located near the Thai and Chinese borders, it sits at a historic crossroads of Southeast Asian trade and offers cultural diversity found nowhere else in Myanmar.

Activities
Hill-tribe trekking is the main activity, arranged through guesthouses. The Maha Myat Muni Pagoda, Wat Jom Kai, and Naung Tung Lake are local attractions.

WiFi is available at Cafe 21. The Golden World Hotel offers free WiFi, though rooms may need to be close enough to the modems for good signal.
Food
Shan khow soi (noodle soup) is the regional staple. Burmese curry restaurants and Chinese options are available. Cafe 21 offers Western food with English-speaking staff.
Money
Local currency is Myanmar kyat (MMK). Chinese beer costs around 800 kyat. Motortaxis are 500 kyat. Some hotels quote prices in US dollars.
Transport
Kengtung is walkable within the town center. Motortaxis cost 500 kyat per ride. Access from major Myanmar cities is only by air, but road access exists from the Thai border.
