Overview
Kaliningrad is the westernmost major city in Russia, a Baltic enclave between Poland and Lithuania with a rich, layered history. Once the German city of Königsberg for 689 years, it was rebuilt after WWII and now blends Prussian architecture, Soviet monumentalism, and modern Russian life.

Before you go
Amber
Kaliningrad produces over 90% of the world's amber. The Amber Museum and Yantarny mine offer authentic pieces. Beware of fakes at tourist stalls—museum gift shops guarantee authenticity.
Money
Local currency is Russian Ruble (RUB). ATMs are widely available. Credit cards accepted at larger hotels and restaurants but carry cash for smaller establishments and markets.
Transport
Khrabrovo Airport has hourly bus 244-Э to city centre. Kaliningrad South railway station is the main rail hub. Local transport includes buses, minibuses, trolleybuses, trams, and commuter rail. Most central sights are walkable.
Weather
Summers (June-August) are mild at 20-25°C. Autumn brings 10-15°C from September-November. Winters are surprisingly mild for Russia, ranging 5°C to -11°C. Always pack rain gear due to unpredictable, windy, and humid Baltic weather.
