Overview

Kakum is Ghana's most accessible rainforest experience, home to the famous canopy walkway suspended 40 metres above the forest floor. The park preserves the best virgin rainforest in the country on the Ghanaian Coastal Plain, making it ideal for nature lovers, birdwatchers, and adventure travelers wanting to experience West African jungle without difficult logistics.

Before you go

Accommodation

Budget travelers should base themselves in Cape Coast and visit Kakum as a day trip. Forest platform camping is available inside the park for adventurous travelers who bring their own gear.

Food

The visitor center cafe is reasonably priced but bring your own food if you want variety or want to save money. Local Ghanaian dishes are not available near the park.

Packing

Bring a flashlight, mosquito net, water, and sturdy walking shoes. Rain is possible year-round—quick-dry clothing is ideal. Early morning visits catch the best wildlife and avoid tour groups.

Safety

Stay on marked trails and follow your guide's instructions. The canopy walkway is safe but can be vertiginous for those afraid of heights. Night sounds in the forest can be intense for first-time jungle sleepers.

Transport

Tro-tros to Kakum from Cape Coast are cheap but return trips are difficult—charter a taxi (300-400 GHS round-trip) or use a tour company for reliability.
