Overview
Kaiping is a pastoral county-level city in Guangdong's Pearl River Delta, famous for its hundreds of diaolou (碉楼) — watchtower dwellings built in the early 20th century by overseas Chinese returning from abroad. These towers, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2007, blend western and eastern architectural styles in fascinating ways: baroque facades crown traditional Chinese layouts, cantilevered upper storeys jut dramatically over rice fields and lotus ponds.
