Overview
Jonava is a practical stopover for travelers moving between Vilnius and western Lithuania, sitting 30 km northeast of Kaunas on the A6 highway. The city offers a genuine local Lithuanian experience away from tourist crowds, with Soviet-era industrial heritage, riverside walks along the Neris, and a modest selection of cafes and supermarkets.

Culture
Jonava grew at a Neris river ford named after Jonas, son of a local landowner. The town was 80-90% Jewish until 1941 when residents were killed during Nazi occupation. The settlement was largely industrial through the Soviet era.

Lithuania uses the Euro (EUR). Credit cards accepted at supermarkets and larger establishments; some smaller cafes and restaurants are cash only.
Transport
Buses from Kaunas run every 30 minutes (50 min journey). Six trains daily from Vilnius (70 min). Bus station is 500 m north of centre; railway station is 2.5 km north.
Weather
Jonava has a temperate continental climate with cold winters (often below -10°C) and mild summers (15-25°C). Best visiting months are May through September.
