Before you go
Culture
The twin cities have strong Jain heritage. Dress modestly when visiting temples and remove shoes before entering. The Sheherwali cuisine at Bari Kothi reflects the Rajasthani-Bengali fusion of the merchant community.
Money
Bargaining is acceptable when purchasing silk sarees from weavers. Carry cash as card payments are unlikely to be accepted in smaller establishments.
Transport
No bridges cross the Bhagirathi River between Jiaganj and Azimganj. Ferry service transports vehicles and passengers. Totos (auto-rickshaws) can be arranged from Murshidabad for day trips.
Weather
Visit October to March for comfortable temperatures. Summers (April-June) can be very hot and humid, making temple exploration less pleasant.
