Before you go

Connectivity

MTN network is recommended for reliability, though multiple SIMs (MTN, Glo, Airtel, 9mobile) are advised as coverage varies. 4G is available but not widespread; 3G is more common. WiFi is limited to hotels in Akure.

Health

Malaria prophylaxis is recommended for Nigeria travel. The tropical rainforest zone means mosquitoes are present; use repellent, especially in evenings. Carry basic first aid supplies and any personal medications as pharmacy options in Idanre are limited.

Money

Nigeria's currency is the Naira (NGN). ATMS are available in Akure but limited in Idanre itself. Carry sufficient cash when visiting, as card acceptance is rare outside major cities. Alade market and local shops are cash-only.

Packing

Bring sturdy walking shoes or sneakers for the 667-step hill ascent, sunscreen, a hat, insect repellent, and a refillable water bottle. A light rain jacket is useful during rainy season. Cash in small denominations is essential.

Transport

Public transport from Akure involves danfos (shared minibuses) or motorcycle taxis. The road to Idanre is approximately 25 km; expect rough patches. No direct train service. Arrange return transport in advance as afternoon departures from Idanre may be infrequent.

Weather

Idanre receives heavy rainfall (2,644mm annually) with a 9-month rainy season from February to November. Hiking is best during dry months (December-January). The hot season peaks in May-June with temperatures reaching 30.5°C—start hikes early morning to avoid heat stress.
