The Deji of Akure's palace, built around 1150 AD, sits in the city center as a testament to the city's Yoruba royal heritage traced to the great-grandson of the divine king Oduduwa. Akure also serves as a regional transport hub with bus connections to Lagos, Abuja, and other southwestern Nigerian cities.

Getting in

Akure lies about 700 km southwest of Abuja and 311 km north of Lagos State. The most practical way to reach Akure is by road via intercity buses from major terminals across Nigeria including Lagos, Onitsha, and Abuja. Akure Airport (AKR) handles flights from Abuja and Lagos along the Akure-Owo Express Road. Bus termini include Old Garage, New Garage, Benin Garage, and Ado Garage, with commercial vehicles running throughout the city for local transport.

Getting around

Commercial vehicles (shared taxis and minibuses) provide the main transport within Akure, moving between various bus termini and stops throughout the city. The most popular termini are Old Garage, New Garage, Benin Garage, and Ado Garage, which serve routes across Ondo State and beyond. Travelers can flag down these vehicles for point-to-point travel within the metropolitan area.

When to go

Akure experiences a tropical rainforest climate with a rainy season lasting about 9.5 months from 6 February to 24 November, with September being the wettest month (228.6 mm average rainfall). The hottest period is March with average highs of 30.5°C and lows of 22°C, while August is the coolest month with highs around 26.6°C and lows of 20.5°C. January is the driest month with only 5.1 mm rainfall. The Egungun Festival occurs annually from November to April, performing Yoruba traditional rites to honor deceased important personalities.

Fingerlicking Restaurant on Gbogi Street near Bolton Hotel offers local and intercontinental cuisine with a sport bar, open Monday to Saturday 7AM-5PM. Budget travelers can try Amala Skot Alagbaka opposite First Bank (daily 7AM-10PM). For chains and familiar options, Chicken Republic and Tantalizer are on Oba Adesida Road. Things to do

The Deji of Akure Palace in the city center is the traditional home of the town's ruler and represents the Yoruba royal heritage. The Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) campus is open to visitors and houses 15,000 students with extensive grounds. Cave Ashes in Isharun is claimed as the site of the oldest pre-historic man in West Africa, with a skeleton discovered by Professor Thurstan Shaw of the University of Ibadan. Ebomi Lake Tourist Centre in Ipesi (Akoko South-East) offers nature exploration and cultural discovery. Igbokoda waterfront provides one of the longest bodies of water in Nigeria for fishing expeditions. Igbo Olodumare at Oke Igbo features an evergreen forest popular for picnics and movie shoots. The Akure Recreational Club in Alagbaka is open Monday-Friday 8AM-6PM.

Safety

Akure is generally considered safe for travelers exercising normal urban precautions. Standard safety practices include securing valuables, using registered taxis, and avoiding isolated areas at night. The Alagbaka district where most hotels and restaurants are concentrated is a relatively secure area near the state government offices. As in any Nigerian city, be aware of petty theft and avoid displaying expensive electronics in crowded areas.
