Overview
Hachimantai is a large volcanic plateau straddling Iwate and Akita prefectures, all mountainous and thinly populated. The area draws visitors for skiing in winter and hiking in summer in Towada-Hachimantai National Park, with numerous onsen hot springs—many accepting day guests.

Hot spring ryokans range ¥12,250-¥20,500 per person with two meals. Day-trip access to mountain hot springs costs around ¥700 at Hachimantai Heights.
Connectivity
Remote hot spring inns like Tōshichi Onsen generate their own power and have spotty to no mobile phone reception.
Transport
Driving is highly recommended as local bus schedules are very limited. Many mountain roads close between late October and late April.
Weather
The area receives about 12 meters of snow annually. January averages -3°C while August reaches 28°C. Visit late May/early June for Dragon's Eye phenomenon.
