Why Go
Gracias is a historic colonial city in the Lempira department of western Honduras, known for its Spanish colonial architecture and proximity to Celaque National Park, home of Honduras's highest peak. The town offers a relaxed alternative to larger Honduran cities, with nearby hot springs, colonial churches, and the fortress of San Cristobal. It's an ideal stop for travelers seeking small-town authenticity and nature-based activities without heavy tourist crowds.
Getting In
Gracias is accessible primarily by bus from major cities. Buses connect to San Pedro Sula, Santa Rosa de Copán, and La Esperanza in Intibucá. The bus station is central and easy to locate by asking locals. There is no airport access within the town itself, so ground transportation is the only option for arrival.
Getting Around
Most of Gracias is walkable, with the central park, main churches, and attractions within easy reach on foot. Red mototaxis (tuktuks) are available throughout town for those who prefer not to walk or need to carry luggage. Mototaxis can be hailed from the street and are an affordable option for short distances.
When To Go
The best time to visit Gracias is during the dry season from November to April, when weather is most favorable for hiking and outdoor activities. The hot springs are particularly popular on weekends and bank holidays. If visiting Termas del Rio, aim for Friday nights, Saturdays, Sundays, or bank holidays for the liveliest atmosphere. Avoid the wet season (May to October) when trails can be muddy and access more difficult.
Where To Stay
Gracias has several hotel options ranging from basic to comfortable. Hotel Guancascos is the most comfortable option at around US$24 per night, run by an expatriate Dutchwoman named Frony, with English spoken and tourist information available. Hotelito Josue offers budget options ranging from under L150 per person for shared bath to L250 for a double with private bath, featuring cold water showers and a garden courtyard. Hotel Erick provides basic, cheap, and clean accommodation. Posada de Don Juan offers luxury amenities including A/C and a swimming pool.
Food And Drink
Local dining options include Hotel Guancascos for quality food, La Meson de Don Juan in Hotel Posada de Don Juan, and Colinas San Cristobal Restaurant. For authentic local cuisine, El Rinconcito Graciano offers small, personal typical food dishes. Numerous comedores and cafeterias are scattered throughout town for casual meals. For drinks, El Candil is a popular local bar (also known as Bayron's place), while Hotel Posada Don Juan and Hotel Guancascos both have full bar services.
Things To Do
Key attractions include the Fortaleza de San Cristobal (El Castillo San Cristobal) on a small hill west of town, free to enter from the south side or via stairs near Hotel Guancascos. The museum with botanical garden at Plaza San Sebastian charges L30 entrance. The San Sebastian Church, San Marcos Church near Central Park, and La Merced Church one block north and east of the parque central are worth visiting, though most churches are often closed. A few kilometers outside town are the 'aguas termales' (hot springs) perfect after hiking. Public hot springs in Arcilaca cost L50 per person with mototaxi access at L50 per person, about 20 minutes away. Termas del Rio charges L60 entrance with larger pools, sports facilities, and a restaurant.
Safety
Gracias is a relatively safe small town, but standard precautions apply. Keep valuables secure, avoid walking alone at night in unfamiliar areas, and use registered transportation. The hot springs areas are generally safe but bring your own supplies. Be aware of your surroundings when visiting markets and crowded areas.
Connectivity
Mobile coverage is available through Honduran carriers. WiFi may be available at hotels and some restaurants, though connection quality varies. Power plugs follow the standard US two-pin format used in Honduras.
