Why Go?

Foz do Iguaçu is Brazil's waterfall capital, hosting one of the world's most spectacular natural attractions—the Iguaçu Falls—whose flow capacity equals three Niagara Falls. The city serves as a rare tri-border gateway where Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina meet, offering easy cross-border day trips for shopping in Ciudad del Este or Argentine wine in Puerto Iguazú. Despite its world-class attractions, the city itself has an un-touristy, authentic Brazilian feel with mostly local commerce and few tourist traps.

Getting In

Iguazu Falls Cataratas International Airport receives frequent flights from Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Santiago. The International Bus Station (Rodoviária Internacional) northeast of the center handles most intercity bus connections. Cross-border travel to Paraguay and Argentina is possible by public bus, taxi, car, or on foot via the Friendship Bridge. Non-car options are strongly recommended as car immigration waits commonly reach 1-2 hours.

Getting Around

The city center is walkable, but reaching attractions requires buses: Bus 120 runs to Iguaçu Falls and Parque das Aves (R$100 park entrance extra), Bus 101/102 goes to Itaipu Dam, and Bus 110 reaches the Three Borders Landmark. Urban buses cost around R$5.50 for border crossings to Ciudad del Este. Moto-taxis and regular taxis are available throughout the city.

When to Go

The falls are impressive year-round, but water flow is highest December-February (summer), creating more dramatic falls at the cost of larger crowds. March-May and September-November offer smaller crowds with still-substantial water flow. Winter months (June-August) see cooler temperatures (9.7-23.7°C) and less rain but can feel stark. The border markets close early at 16:00 in winter and 17:00 in summer.

Pousada El Shaddai (Rua Engenheiro Reboucas 306) provides dorms from R$22 or doubles from R$60 with pool access near banks and restaurants. Mid-range options like Nadai Confort Hotel sit along Av. Food and Drink

Local restaurants cluster around Rua Rui Barbosa, Rua Eng. Rebouças, and Av. Paraná. La Bella Pizza (Rua Xavier da Silva 648) offers all-you-can-eat pizza and pasta from R$15-35. Bufalo Branco is the best churrascaria in town, priced around R$85. Martignoni Pizza Parlor (Av. Paraná 3535) serves rodizio-style pizza, pasta, and meats for R$50-70. Downtown shopping along Av. Brasil targets locals rather than tourists, with shops closed evenings and Sundays.

Things to Do

The must-see Iguaçu Falls (R$100) operates ticket booths 8AM-4PM with last shuttle at 5:30PM—expect 2-4 hour waits for entry times on busy days. Parque das Aves (R$80) near the falls entrance showcases 900 birds from 180 species plus butterflies and reptiles. The Itaipu Dam (Panoramic bus R$56) is the world's largest hydroelectric generator. The Three Borders Landmark shows all three countries meeting, with evening light shows. Adventure seekers can take the Macuco Safari boat tour (R$362 plus park entrance) into the canyon near Garganta do Diabo falls.

Safety

Serious crime has occurred on the Friendship Bridge pedestrian walkway, where attackers in groups of 2-4 with pistols target tourists carrying cash and electronics. The narrow enclosed walkway makes escape impossible. Attacks are particularly common in 2018 and featured on TV news. Despite police presence, the bridge has no security. The risk is real but odds remain low during daylight hours. Hide valuables, walk with locals rather than in tourist groups, or simply take the bus instead.

Connectivity

The airport offers free WiFi throughout. SIM cards from Brazilian carriers are widely available in convenience stores. Power outlets use the standard Brazilian Type C/N (Europlug) and Type N (two-pin with grounding). The city has good 4G coverage from major carriers.
