Why go?

Ciudad del Este, Paraguay's second-largest city, sits at the border with Brazil and is a major shopping hub for imported goods at unbeatable prices. It also serves as a convenient gateway to the world-famous Iguaçu Falls and the impressive Itaipú Dam, offering a base for day trips to these natural and engineering wonders.

Getting in

Guaraní International Airport (AGT) in Minga Guazú connects Ciudad del Este with Asunción via Paranair and Sol del Paraguay, and also to Pedro Juan Caballero. The main bus terminal (Terminal de Omnibus) serves long-distance buses from other Paraguayan cities and neighbouring countries. From Brazil, you can cross the Friendship Bridge from Foz do Iguaçu on foot or by bus.

Getting around

The city centre is walkable, especially the shopping streets San Blas and Camilo Recalde. Red Matiauda buses connect the centre to the border, the dam, and nearby towns. Taxis are available but agree on a fare beforehand. Buses to Hernandarias cost GS.5,000.

When to go

Ciudad del Este has a subtropical climate: summers (December–February) are hot and humid with frequent rain, while winters (June–August) are mild and drier. Year-round rain is common, so pack accordingly. The busiest shopping periods are around Christmas and the Brazilian Carnival.

Where to stay

Accommodation ranges from basic fan rooms (from US$12 at Hotel Tía Nancy near the bus terminal) to more comfortable options with air conditioning and hot water (US$20–33). Many hotels are clustered downtown or near the terminal. Breakfast is often included in mid-range hotels.

Food & drink

Ethnic diversity defines the food scene: try street asado (barbecue) on Cap. Miranda for GS.10,000 a plate with manioc, or head to Asian restaurants around Adrian Jara and Boquerón. Arab shawarma, Chinese, Korean, and vegetarian options (like Govinda Restaurante Veg) are available. US-style burger joints are also common.

Things to do

The main draws are shopping and day trips. Visit the Itaipú Dam for free panoramic tours (or special technical tours with advance booking). See the impressive Salto del Monday waterfall (GS.84,000 entry, plus GS.30,000 for the elevator) in Presidente Franco. The Three Borders Landmark offers a view of Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay. For nature, the Tati Yupi Biological Reserve (free, permit needed) offers hiking and wildlife spotting.

Safety

Ciudad del Este is somewhat more dangerous than other Paraguayan cities, with dark alleys and many male tradespeople around the border. Avoid isolated streets at night, keep valuables out of sight, and beware of scams when buying electronics. The shopping areas are busy and generally safe during daylight hours.

Connectivity

Free WiFi is available in the park in front of the Municipal Library (Biblioteca Municipal) and from the library itself. Mobile coverage is generally good, but no specific SIM card or provider details are mentioned in the guide.

Budget

A budget traveler can get by on around US$20–30 per day: dorm or basic hotel from US$12, street asado meal for GS.10,000 (~US$1.30), local bus rides for GS.5,000. Shopping bargains are plentiful, but stick to your budget. Many attractions like Itaipú panoramic tour and Three Borders Landmark are free.

Day trips

The Iguaçu Falls (30 km southeast) are a must-see, accessible via Brazil or Argentina. The Itaipú Dam and its museum are a half-day trip to Hernandarias. Salto del Monday in Presidente Franco is a beautiful waterfall reachable by red Matiauda bus. The Three Borders Landmark is closer, offering a unique tri-border view.

Etiquette

Spanish and Portuguese are widely spoken; a basic 'No, gracias' suffices for persistent vendors. When buying electronics, always test the device and never hand it back to the shopkeeper to avoid scams. Bargaining is common in markets, but remain polite.

Go next

From Ciudad del Este, the top onward destination is Iguaçu Falls, just over 30 km away. Buses cross the bridge to Foz do Iguaçu (Brazil) and Puerto Iguazú (Argentina). Other exits include Asunción by air or bus, and Saltos del Guairá further north.
