Overview
Esna is a compact, layered Nile town where 3,000 years of history are packed into a few blocks. The main draw is the buried Temple of Khnum, sunk 9 meters below modern street level and remarkably well-preserved with vivid color on its columns and ceilings.

Before you go
Culture
Esna has a unique social structure with neighborhoods inhabited by deeply-rooted local families. The market and streets offer authentic glimpses of daily life without heavy tourism infrastructure.
Health
Standard Nile Valley precautions apply: drink bottled water, use sunscreen, and carry basic first aid. Medical facilities are limited—Luxor has better options for non-emergencies.
Money
Egyptian Pound (EGP) is the local currency. Carry enough cash for the temple entrance (LE80) and tuk-tuk rides, as card facilities are limited outside major hotels.
Transport
Tuk-tuks cost up to LE20 within town. The railway station is on the east bank—factor in the bridge crossing time when arriving. Train connections to Luxor and Aswan are frequent.
Weather
Summer temperatures in Upper Egypt are extreme (40°C+). Visit October–May for comfortable sightseeing. The temple's underground location keeps it cooler than street level.
