Before you go
Accessibility
Most natural attractions require 4x4 vehicles and local knowledge. Organized tours from Guerrero Negro offer the most accessible way to experience the reserve's highlights.
Nature
The reserve spans over 96,000 square miles (2,546,790 hectares), making it one of the largest biosphere reserves globally. Coastal lagoons serve as gray whale nurseries from December through March.
Safety
The inhospitable desert environment makes self-travel challenging. Tour operators in Guerrero Negro provide organized access to whale watching and canyon sites. Carry ample water and inform someone of your travel plans.
Transport
MEX 1 is the only major highway crossing the reserve. No fuel stations exist within the desert interior sections—fill up in Guerrero Negro before venturing off the main road.
