Overview
Deqin sits at 3,550m in Kham (a former Tibetan province now administered by Yunnan), offering a rare taste of Tibetan culture without expensive permits. The town serves as the last Yunnan stop before Tibet proper, with impossibly steep valleys, snow peaks, remote monasteries, and class A trekking for all levels.

Health
Altitude of 3,550m requires acclimatization—ascend slowly, stay hydrated, and watch for altitude sickness symptoms. Winter temperatures are severe. March is particularly risky with rain turning to snow.

Safety
Remote mountain area with limited emergency services. Mountain roads are treacherous. Trek routes have basic tea-houses but medical facilities are scarce. Register your passport at Yubeng scenic area.
Transport
