Overview
Chengde served as the summer retreat for early Qing Dynasty emperors, escaping Beijing's summer heat. The UNESCO-listed Imperial Summer Mountain Resort (避暑山庄) incorporates lakes, pagodas, and palaces within a walled parkland, while eight outer temples showcase Tibetan and Mongolian Buddhist architecture.
