Overview
Chaiya is a small, quiet town on Southern Thailand's Central Gulf Coast that was once the capital of the Srivijaya Empire (8th-13th centuries). Today it draws travelers with well-preserved Srivijaya-era temples, a respected meditation monastery, and local handwoven silk production.

Surat Thani International Airport is 30 km south. Chaiya is on the Bangkok-Southern Thailand train line. Local songthaews provide basic transport within town.
