Overview
The park draws mountaineering visitors to several mountain peaks, most notably Volcan Cayambe, which at 5,790 meters is the third highest peak in Ecuador and the highest point on the equator. The park offers exceptional opportunities for trekking through paramo landscapes, birdwatching in cloud forests, and exploring Amazon jungle all within a single protected area.

Before you go
Money
Park entry fee is US$10. Many sites like Cascada Rio Malo charge additional small fees (US$1). Some attractions like Gruta los Tayos require guide fees of approximately US$5.
Packing
Bring layers for high-altitude sections, rain gear, hiking boots, and sun protection. Higher elevations near Volcan Cayambe require mountaineering equipment.
Safety
Weather conditions can change rapidly at high altitudes. Hire local guides for jungle cave explorations. The Cayambe entrance area has several hostels and restaurants for overnight stays.
Transport
Local buses are the cheapest way to reach the park entrances from Quito. Taxis offer convenient but longer rides. A rental car provides flexibility for visiting multiple entrances.
Weather
The park spans dramatically different altitudes and ecosystems. High-altitude paramo areas are cold and foggy, while Amazon lowlands are hot and humid year-round.
