Overview

Cadereyta (also known as Cadereyta de Montes) is one of Mexico's designated Pueblos Mágicos, offering a well-preserved colonial center with baroque churches, artisan workshops, and a botanical garden showcasing the region's desert flora. The town was founded in 1640 as a Spanish military and administrative stronghold to pacify the Jonaces and Pame indigenous groups and support Franciscan missionaries in the Sierra Gorda.

Activities

Skydiving available at Aerodromo Cadereyta. Hiking to Maconi waterfalls and through Cañón del Caracol are popular outdoor activities. Day passes to Hacienda Tovares include spa and horseback riding.

Crafts

Over 300 local artisans produce pottery, leather, marble, and woven goods. Workshops in Boxsani neighborhood welcome visitors. Direct purchase from craftspeople is common.

Prices quoted in Mexican pesos (M$). Bus fare M$100 from Querétaro. Budget meals around M$80-120. ATM availability in town is limited; carry enough cash for the day.

Transport

Buses from Querétaro (M$100, 90 minutes) are the main access. The Central de Autobuses is on MEX 120 at the Ocampo corner. Local walking is easy in the historic center; taxis available for outlying sites.

Weather

Hot, dry climate typical for much of Querétaro. Mountain microclimates in the Sierra Gorda create biodiversity. Best visited in cooler months (October-April).
