Overview
Berhampore (also called Baharampur) is the administrative headquarters of Murshidabad district, sitting along the upper Hooghly River. While downstream Murshidabad was the capital of Bengal under the Nawabs, Berhampore sees far fewer tourists.

Kansa (copper alloy) kitchenware from Khagrai is considered India's best. Murshidabad Silk remains the regional specialty.
Transport
Toto (electric rickshaws) are the main local transport. Always bargain and confirm fare before boarding since no meters exist.
