Beira is Mozambique's second largest city and a major port, offering a rare glimpse of colonial-era grandeur in decay. The city was 90% destroyed by Cyclone Idai in March 2019 but has since been largely rebuilt.

Money
Currency is Mozambican Metical (Mtn). Cash is preferred for small purchases. Hotel Moçambique starts at MT1400 including breakfast. Hotel Miramar offers rooms from MT800-1600 for single/double occupancy.
Safety
Avoid walking in Baixa area at night alone. Don't display valuables. Keep car doors locked and windows mostly closed when driving at night. Children frequently cross roads unpredictably.
Transport
Chapas (minibuses) are the main local transport. Taxis available for airport transfers (10 km from town). Driving at night is discouraged due to safety concerns and intoxicated pedestrians.
