Why go?
Vilanculos (also spelled Vilankulo) is Mozambique's premier beach resort town and self-proclaimed capital of water sports. The town serves as the gateway to the Bazaruto Archipelago, home to the country's only underwater national park with pristine coral reefs and rare dugongs. Accommodation ranges from budget hostels (from R150) to Indonesian-styled luxury casas at Archipelago Resort, making it accessible for all budgets. The atmosphere is relaxed and far less touristy than Zanzibar or Mauritius, with genuine local culture still intact in the town itself.

Getting in
Vilanculos International Airport (VNX) is served by Airlink, LAM (Linhas Aéreas de Moçambique), and Federal Air with connections via Johannesburg or Maputo. Overland options include comfortable coach services from Maputo or Beira, and cheaper 15-seater vans from Inhambane. Charter flights are available at competitive prices from South Africa and Zimbabwe. Most visitors fly in; road transport is less expensive but longer.

Getting around
The central part of town is compact and walkable. Bicycle rentals and chapas (shared minibuses) serve the wider area. The beachfront area is easily explored on foot, with most restaurants, shops, and tour operators within a 15-minute walk of each other. South Beach is about a 5-minute walk south of the center and is quieter than the northern end.

When to go
The dry season from March to November offers temperatures of 15-23°C—bring a sweater for cool evenings. This is the optimal time for diving, sailing, and dhow safaris. The rainy season (December to February) brings heat between 23-34°C with humidity, though storms are typically brief. July to October is peak season when humpback whales migrate past the islands. Avoid the rainy season if you prioritize water clarity for diving.
