Overview
Bastimentos is a car-free Caribbean island in Panama's Bocas del Toro province, offering jungle trails, secluded beaches, and a quieter atmosphere than party-focused Bocas town. The island forms part of Isla Bastimentos National Marine Park, protecting mangrove swamps, shallow waters, and four species of nesting sea turtles.

Before you go
Culture
Old Bank has a more authentic Caribbean vibe than Bocas town, with visible poverty. After dark, some areas can feel intimidating. Drinking publicly is prohibited.
Money
The supermarket near the docks is the most expensive on the island. Two cheaper options are along the water path in Old Bank. Prices are lower than US or European standards but higher than mainland Panama.
Nature
The island is part of Isla Bastimentos National Marine Park, protecting nesting areas for four sea turtle species, mangrove swamps, and shallow waters.
Safety
Robberies with machetes have been reported on the Wizard Beach path since 2006. Use the Cerro Bastimentos hill route instead, and leave valuables at your accommodation.
Transport
Water taxis (taxi boats) connect Bastimentos to Bocas Town for $5 one way. No cars exist on the island—walking and water taxis are the only transport options.
