Overview

Barro Colorado Island is a pristine tropical jungle island created when the Panama Canal was built in 1913, now sitting in Lake Gatun. The island has been the site of continuous scientific study by the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute for more than 80 years, making it one of the most researched tropical rainforests in the world.
