Before you go
Connectivity
3G coverage available with varying quality. Internet cafés in town. Major Tanzanian SIM providers work here.
Food
Local meals (rice, ugali, pilaw with sauce and meat) from TSh 1,500. Western food available at coastal resorts and Poa Poa restaurant. Street chips in evenings.
Money
Tanzanian Shilling (TSh) is the currency. The only ATM in town accepting international credit cards is at CRDB Bank. Cash is widely preferred for transactions.
Safety
Muggings occur, especially at night and in the eastern slum area. Police are unreliable. Self-justice is common—screaming 'mwizi' (thief) brings quick local help but may endanger the accused.
Transport
Daladalas connect Bagamoyo to Dar es Salaam (TSh 2,600 total via Makumbusho and Bunju Sokoni) in 2h30-3h. Local transport includes bajajis (from TSh 1,500), taxis (from TSh 3,000), and bike rentals (TSh 2,000/day).
Weather
Coastal tropical climate—hot and humid year-round. Best visited during dry season (June-October). Heavy rains can make unsealed roads impassable.
