Overview
Aracaju is the smallest state capital in Brazil's Northeast, and among the most peaceful. It punches above its weight for a city of 673,000: a well-maintained beachfront at Atalaia, excellent crab-and-beer culture, and manageable crowds compared to Maceió or Salvador.

Before you go
Connectivity
Major carriers (Vivo, Claro, TIM, Oi) cover the city. 4G is solid in tourist zones. 220V power with Brazilian three-prong plugs.
Food
Crab (caranguejo) is the local specialty, typically eaten at beachfront shacks with cold beer. Moqueca (coconut fish stew) is excellent and widely available.
Money
Buses cost R$4 per ride (March 2021). ATM coverage is good in the Atalaia/Jardins area; avoid downtown branches that Google's mapping shows but aren't there.
Safety
The North Zone and Nossa Senhora do Socorro require caution; avoid Atalaia beachfront alone at night; downtown robberies happen even to locals.
Transport
Use the Moovit app for real-time bus info; Google Maps is outdated. Bus transfers at terminals are free. Uber is reliable for taxis.
Weather
Tropical climate year-round (22-31°C). May-June is rainiest (200+ mm/month); October-December is driest (under 40 mm). August-October offers the best balance.
