Alytus sits at the confluence of the rivers Nemunas and Alytupelis in Lithuania's Dzūkija region. It's primarily an industrial center known for refrigerator manufacturing, timber products, and textiles rather than tourism.

Budget accommodation is limited. Hotel Dzukija offers the best value at €30 B&B double. Mid-range options include Hotel Vaidila (€60) and Senas Namas (€70).

Food
Local Lithuanian cuisine at Dzūkų alaus restoranas. Fast food at Čeburekinė. Budget around €10-15 for a sit-down meal, less for street food.

Lithuania uses the euro (€). ATMs are available in town. Most restaurants and hotels accept cards, but carry some cash for smaller establishments.

Transport
Kautra buses run hourly from Vilnius (1hr 40min) and Kaunas (just over 1hr). The bus station is 2 km northwest of center. No railway service exists.
