Overview
Akhtala is a quiet mining town in Lori Province, best known for its medieval Akhtala monastery with vivid 13th-century Byzantine frescoes. The town holds unique historical significance as the first Greek settlement in Armenia, established in 1763 when 300 Greek miners were brought from Trabzon to work the copper mines.
