Overview

The Debed Canyon’s main city is more useful as a base than as a historic center itself. Nearby UNESCO monasteries, a riverside bridge, and village trails reward staying a few nights.

Why go?

Alaverdi is the largest city in the Debed Canyon, an area rich with historical monuments and natural beauty. It is an important commercial and industrial centre, but the city itself offers little historic value beyond the beautiful old foot bridge. The surrounding villages host UNESCO monasteries like Sanahin and Haghpat. Accommodation is limited, so staying a few nights allows deeper exploration without daily commute from Yerevan.

Get in

Alaverdi is accessible from Yerevan by marshrutka or train. The bus station and train station serve as main arrival points. Marshrutkas to nearby villages like Odzun depart regularly. Private taxi to the Georgian border at Bagratashen costs about 4,500 dram.

Get around

The town along the Debed River is walkable. To reach Sanahin and Sarahart on the canyon rim, take a taxi (1,000 dram), marshrutka (100 dram), or hitchhike. The M-6 road is now paved, making travel easier. For most destinations in the canyon, hitchhiking is viable, and taxis are abundant.

Where to stay

Accommodation inside Alaverdi is limited to a few options like Lalvar Hotel (20,000 dram double) and budget guesthouses. Most stays are in nearby villages: B&B Iris (15,000-20,000 dram double), Parisis B&B (12,000 dram double), and Anna Maria Hotel (5,000 dram). Many B&Bs serve meals for 2,500-4,000 dram. Camping is also possible at some places.

Food and drink

Alaverdi has a few restaurants and cafes. Near the 12th-century bridge of Sanahin, cafes serve simple snacks with nice river views; coffee is 200 dram. Barbecue restaurants line the highway. Almost all hotels and B&Bs have their own restaurants offering set meals for 2,600-3,100 dram. The Sanahin Bridge Hotel has a lounge bar.

Things to do

Hike between the UNESCO monasteries of Sanahin and Haghpat (9 km, 2-3 hours). Visit the Mikoyan Brothers Museum in Sanahin (500 dram adults, includes guided tour). Explore Akhtala Monastery with its exquisite frescoes. Horse-riding tours with local guide Saro Ohanyan and cooking classes at Iris Guesthouse are also available. The area is great for photography and nature walks.

Stay safe

Hiking trails are frequently packed dirt on steep inclines next to drop-offs, with no guard rails. They become slippery when wet, and many plants have thorns. Plan ahead, wear sturdy shoes, and carry water. It's possible to walk for hours without seeing anyone outside villages.

Connect

Internet is available in most hotels and B&Bs. Mobile 3G signal is quite good. There are two mobile operator stores in town near the bus station: VivaCell MTS and Ucom. Beeline SIM cards can be bought at the nearby grocery store.
