Overview
Akashi is a working port city in Hyogo prefecture, positioned between Kobe and Himeji along the Sanyo Shinkansen line. It makes an easy half-day or overnight trip from Kobe, offering a more local feel than tourist-heavy destinations.

Akashiyaki (egg takoyaki dipped in dashi) is the local specialty, along with fresh sea bream and nori seaweed. Expect to pay more for seafood than average.

Transport
Akashi Station on the JR Sanyo Line is the main hub; Sanyo Shinkansen also stops here. Ferry to Awaji Island departs every 20 minutes from Akashi Port.
