Places in Réunion

  • Cirque de Mafate

Cirque de Mafate is one of the world's most dramatic volcanic cirques, forming the western crater of the extinct Piton des Neiges volcano on Réunion. Unlike typical national parks, there are no roads—access is exclusively on foot or by helicopter, making it a pristine wilderness experience.

  • Réunion National Park

Réunion National Park protects the dramatic interior of a volcanic island in the Indian Ocean. The park covers 1,750 km² — about 70% of Réunion's land area — with UNESCO-recognized inner zones featuring the island's two volcanoes, Piton des Neiges (3,067 m) and Piton de la Fournaise (2,631 m), as well as the inaccessible Cirque de Mafate.

  • Saint-Denis

Saint-Denis is the capital and largest city of Réunion, a French Overseas Department between Mauritius and Madagascar. The city serves as the administrative center with all major government offices, the state university, and the customs authority.

    Atlas entry

  • Saint-Gilles

Saint-Gilles is Réunion's most popular seaside resort, offering lagoon beaches, coral-protected swimming areas, and easy access to the island's interior. The town provides a relaxed coastal counterpoint to the volcanic landscapes of Piton de la Fournaise and the island's highland trails.

    Atlas entry

  • Saint-Leu

Saint-Leu packs Réunion's most consistent surf into a compact, walkable town on the west coast. The pebble beach with lagoon offers safe swimming between surf sessions, and the town serves as a quieter base than Saint-Gilles for exploring the coastline.
