Why Go?
Zhengzhou is a major transportation hub in central China, selected for development after 1949 and now home to 12.8 million residents. The city serves as a convenient gateway to Henan's cultural sites: Kaifeng's ancient temples, Luoyang's Longmen Grottoes, and the Shaolin Temple at Songshan. While Zhengzhou itself has fewer traditional tourist attractions than neighboring cities, its practical location and transport connections make it an ideal base for exploring the region.

Understand
The name Zhengzhou originates from a Sui Dynasty city, though its actual location was in modern-day Chenggao. During the Tang Dynasty, the name shifted to the current location. The city is located in north-central Henan Province where the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River divide. The urban planning is more noticeable here than in other Chinese cities since Zhengzhou was handpicked as a transportation hub rather than growing organically over centuries.

Climate
Zhengzhou experiences a continental monsoon climate with distinct seasons: dry springs, hot rainy summers, clear autumns, and cold dry winters. Winter (Nov 10 - Mar 26) lasts 137 days, summer (May 21 - Sep 7) lasts 110 days. Average annual precipitation is 640.9 mm with a frost-free period of 220 days. Extreme temperatures range from 43.0°C to -19.7°C. The best times to visit are spring (late March to mid-May) and autumn (September to early November) for milder weather.

Toscana Cafe
A very good Italian-style restaurant in North-eastern Zhengzhou. Considering the owner and staff have never been outside of Zhengzhou or China, it is pretty decent food, and not badly priced. Lasagna noodles are made in house and they have an American chef to try to help them become "more authentic". He updated the Caesar Salad dressing, and it is well worth a try.
