Overview
Zenica is Bosnia and Herzegovina's fourth-largest city, roughly 70 km north of Sarajevo along the Bosna river, surrounded by mountains and hills. The city blends an industrial present — dominated by the Zenica Steelworks — with a historic Stara čaršija (old quarter) containing Ottoman-era mosques, a former synagogue turned gallery, and Austrian-era fountains.

Before you go
Air quality
Zenica Steelworks dominates the local air quality. Walking around can be difficult on poor days; consider timing outdoor activities for mornings or when winds clear the haze.
Culture
The Stara čaršija preserves Ottoman-era architecture alongside Austrian-Habsburg remnants, reflecting Zenica's layered history under different empires.
Outdoor
Mountain Smetovi is the main draw — hiking in summer, skiing in winter. Marked trails exist; prepare for limited services at higher elevations.
Transport
Trains run from Sarajevo (5+ daily) and Banja Luka (2 daily), plus the overnight Bihać-Sarajevo train stops here. The city is walkable in the center; taxis serve wider areas.
