Overview
Yuzhno-Kurilsk is the administrative center of the Kuril Islands chain, a remote Russian territory contested with Japan for decades. The town itself was severely damaged by a tsunami in 1994 and offers little in the way of urban attractions, but the surrounding Kunashir Island hosts one of the world's most unique natural environments with free-roaming brown bears and wild horses.
