Overview
Yushan (Jade Mountain) is Taiwan's highest peak at 3,952 meters and has been claimed as the tallest mountain in East Asia depending on how one defines the region. The mountain draws climbers from all over Taiwan and the world, attracted by its panoramic views, overlapping mountain ranges, deep plunging valleys, and the famous 'sea of clouds' (yúnhǎi) that fills the valleys below.

Before you go
Accommodation
Paiyun Lodge is the only option near the summit. Must book online at least 1 month in advance. Tungpu hot spring town offers lower-elevation alternatives.
Connectivity
Spotty cell phone reception on many sections of the trail. No mention of WiFi availability at lodges.
Safety
Altitude sickness risk; prior fitness training essential. Stay on marked trails, carry emergency contact numbers from permit. Cell phone reception spotty on trail.
Transport
Shuttle from Tatajia Visitor Center to trailhead costs NT$100. Access via Taichung-Shueili-Heshe-Tongpu-Tataka or Chiayi-Alishan-Tataka routes.
Weather
Summers are wet (May-August monsoon season, typhoon risk July-September); winters are dry with snow above 3,000m from October-May. Best climbing window is October-April for clearer skies.
