Overview
Yufuin is famous for its hot spring outflow (second highest in Japan), but what sets it apart is the artsy European spa-town atmosphere with avant-garde galleries, traditional crafts, and fancy cafés. The double-peaked Mount Yufu-dake (1584m) volcano overlooks a lush green valley where steam rises from the hillsides.

Before you go
Connectivity
Yufuin has good mobile coverage from major Japanese carriers (NTT Docomo, SoftBank, au). Convenience store WiFi and café WiFi are available. Consider purchasing a tourist SIM or pocket WiFi at airports for convenient data access.
Culture
Yufuin has a consciously European spa-town atmosphere, but traditional Japanese etiquette still applies in hot springs. Remove shoes when entering ryokan, keep voice levels low in public spaces, and avoid photography in sacred areas.
Hot springs
Yufuin claims the second highest hot spring outflow in Japan. Many ryokan and public baths offer onsen experiences. Footbaths (足湯) allow casual soaking without full immersion. Remove swimwear before entering indoor onsen.
Money
Japan uses yen (JPY). Most restaurants and shops accept credit cards, but smaller establishments and many traditional ryokan may be cash-only. ATMs at convenience stores (7-Eleven, Lawson, FamilyMart) accept foreign cards and are widely available.
Transport
The Kamenoi Bus route 36 runs hourly between Yufuin Station and Beppu, stopping at key points including the Mount Yufu trailhead. Walking is the best way to explore the compact town center.
