Overview
Yonaguni is Japan's westernmost inhabited island, sitting 107 km from Taiwan at its closest point. With only 1,700 residents and no resorts, it offers an unspoiled alternative to busier Yaeyama destinations.

Before you go
Diving
Strong currents and open ocean conditions mean most diving is drift diving for experienced divers only. Yonaguni Diving Service and SOUWES are the main operators.
Food
Many visitors eat meals at their accommodation. Try chōmei-sō (longevity grass) and the local hanazake awamori at the three Sonai breweries.
Language
Japanese spoken everywhere; locals are bilingual. Local Dunan language is unique and largely unintelligible to mainland Japanese.
Money
No banks on Yonaguni; withdraw cash from post office ATMs in Sonai and Kubura. No convenience stores. Supermarket in Sonai open until 20:00.
Transport
All island buses are free. Rent-a-car from ¥5,000/day at airport. Most lodgings offer free airport/ferry transfers if booked ahead.
Weather
Typhoon season (fall) can cause flight and ferry cancellations at short notice. Build buffer days into your itinerary.
