Overview
Yamunotri is one of the Char Dhams of Hinduism, the sacred source of the Yamuna River nestled in the Garhwal Himalayas at 3,293m elevation. This pilgrimage site attracts devout Hindus seeking to bathe in the icy waters of Goddess Yamuna and visit the black idol in the main sanctum sanctorum.

Culture
Photography strictly prohibited inside the temple sanctum sanctorum. Respectful dress and behavior expected at this active Hindu pilgrimage site.
Food
Strictly Satvik vegetarian diet—no onion, garlic, eggs, or meat. Simple pilgrim food available near the temple and along the trek.
Safety
High-altitude trek (3,293m) requires good health. Those with cardiac or respiratory issues should avoid the climb. Limited emergency services in the area.
Transport
Private taxi or shared jeep from Rishikesh or Haridwar to Janaki Chatti, then 6km trek on foot/by pony to the temple. No local transport operates within the area.
Water
Natural spring water available free at taps en route. Glacier water at the temple source is considered sacred. Consider bringing purification tablets as backup.
Weather
Open only mid-May to Diwali (November). Winter brings heavy snowfall closing all access. Summer months can be crowded with inflated prices.
