Overview
Shimla is a mountain capital known for its cool summers and Victorian architecture. The Mall and The Ridge give visitors a focus for walks through its historic centre.
Languages: English, Hindi, Tamil
Why go?
Shimla is the capital of Himachal Pradesh, perched at 2,200m above sea level, famous for its cool summer climate and well-preserved Victorian architecture along The Mall and The Ridge. The city served as British India's summer capital, leaving a legacy of half-timbered buildings, churches, and colonial-era lodges. It's a popular honeymoon destination and holiday retreat, offering mountain views, trekking opportunities, and a slower pace than major Indian cities.

Understand
Shimla has a population of around 172,000, which can increase by another 100,000 during peak tourist season. Most residents are from the Pahadi community, the natives of Himachal Pradesh, though there is a sizable minority from Punjab and Sindh who moved here during partition. Languages spoken include Hindi, Punjabi, Pahadi, and English as a lingua franca. The name possibly originates from 'Shyamali Devi', a reincarnation of Goddess Kali.

Getting in
The Kalka–Shimla Railway is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Mountain Railways of India. The narrow-gauge railway offers spectacular mountain scenery. Shimla Airport (Jubbarhatti) is 22km away but has a short 1,230m runway accommodating only turboprop aircraft. Most travelers arrive by bus from Delhi (10-12 hours), Chandigarh (4-5 hours), or Manali (8-9 hours). The New ISBT has major connections to Mandi, Manali, Chandigarh, and Delhi.

Get around
Getting around Shimla is easy compared to other cities in Himachal Pradesh. The city has an ingenious system of 'lifts' connecting Cart Road to The Mall for ₹10 per trip. Local buses run regularly from the Old ISBT (west of Lower Bazaar) from 7AM-9PM for ₹10 to connect to New ISBT and IGMC Bus Station. The Mall is a 7km thoroughfare where most sightseeing is concentrated.

When to go
Shimla is most popular during summer (May-June) when temperatures range 16-28°C and the climate offers relief from plains heat. Spring (March-April) brings clear skies and 10-20°C weather. Autumn (October-November) offers clear skies and 10-23°C with chilly evenings. Monsoon (July-September) brings continuous rain and humidity. Winter (December-February) sees temperatures drop to -7-10°C with frequent snowfall, ideal for ice skating.

Ashiana & Goofa
Whatever little can be had of Himachali cuisine can be found at these twin-restaurants run by Himachal Tourism, the one located above the other. The food is neither cheap nor the best in town, but it is safe and they otherwise do their best. A good spot for people-watching, the location within a circular high glass building has attracted comment in guidebooks: it lies in fact on the site of a historical structure, known as the Band Stand, which was a gift to the city made in 1907 by the ruler of one of the innumerable princely states of the pre-independence India (Jabalpur in what is today the state of Madhya Pradesh). Sit-in or takeaway.
