Overview
Xunantunich is Belize's most-visited Maya archaeological site, featuring 9th-century ruins with about 25 temples and palaces spread across six groups atop a hill overlooking the Mopan River. The star attraction is El Castillo, a 40m (131 ft) pyramid providing sweeping 360-degree views of jungle, Guatemala's borderlands, and surrounding ruins.

Packing
Bring water, sun protection, and sturdy shoes for uphill walking. The site has limited shade—hats and sunscreen are essential.
Safety
The site is safe for tourists. The main risk is the long uphill walk in heat; carry water. Ferry crossing is safe but slow—plan return timing to avoid waiting in queues near closing.
Transport
Buses run regularly from San Ignacio to the site (B$2.50). Taxis available (B$8-10). Free hand-cranked ferry is the only river crossing. Walk 1 mile uphill from ferry to ruins.
