Overview
Mount Wǔtái (五台山 Wǔtái Shān) is one of the four Sacred Buddhist mountains of China and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Shanxi Province. It is regarded as the domain of the Bodhisattva Manjusri, an emanation of wisdom, making it a major pilgrimage destination.

Accommodation
Lodging concentrated in Táihuái Village center. Friday/Saturday nights and full/new moon dates see higher prices. Otherwise oversupply means sharp discounts available.
Culture
Wǔtái Shān is one of four sacred Buddhist mountains of China, domain of Bodhisattva Manjusri. Vegetarian food (素 sù) is plentiful. Over 50 temples, many free or ¥10 entrance.
Money
Chinese Yuan (CNY, ¥) is the local currency. ATMs may be limited in Táihuái village - withdraw cash in Taiyuan or Datong before visiting. Cash preferred for small purchases and tips.
Safety
Beware of monks offering fortune-telling services - a tourist trap. Avoid buying from monks at small temple below Zhenhai Temple.
Transport
Green coach ticket (¥50) is compulsory with park entrance. Valid for 3 days. Runs every 5 minutes until about 18:30. Minibuses to Five Plateaus depart at 7:00 AM from foot of Dàiluó Peak.
Weather
Cool weather year-round at Wǔtái Shān. Wear long trousers in summer evenings. North peak (3058 m) has thin air - not altitude sickness level but noticeable.
