Overview
Wenchuan is one of only 4 counties that are the main location of China's Qiang ethnic group, offering authentic cultural immersion away from crowded tourist trails. The area straddles the confluence of the Min and Zagunao Rivers, with dramatic mountain scenery and traditional fortress-like villages.

Hotels range from ¥100-888. Guesthouses (住宿/旅馆/客栈) are around ¥80. English is not spoken; sign language should suffice.
Culture
Wenchuan is in Qiang ethnic heartland. Traditional dancing happens at the riverside square most evenings. Qiang holidays bring special celebrations with goat-roasts.
Money
China Construction Bank ATM near the museum/library accepts foreign credit and debit cards. Local currency is Chinese Yuan (¥).
Safety
The 2008 earthquake heavily damaged the area, but tourism is slowly picking up. Villages like Luobozhai were badly damaged but are being rebuilt.
Transport
Chadianzi bus station in western Chengdu is the departure point. Journey takes 2.5 hours and costs about ¥45. Local taxis/minivans cost ¥50-60 to nearby villages.
