Why go?

Wee Waa (population 2,080) is a small outback town in the New England region of New South Wales, self-styled as 'The Cotton Capital of Australia' — the birthplace of the commercial cotton industry in 1961. The name means 'fire for roasting' in the indigenous Kamilaroi language. First settled in the 1840s, it was the first settlement on the Namoi River and remains a service town for surrounding villages. It's a quiet stopover for travelers exploring the Kamilaroi Highway corridor between Narrabri and Walgett.

When to go

The Wee Waa Show is held annually in May at the Wee Waa Showground on Maitland Street — a local fair worth timing a visit around. The Pilliga Hot Artesian Bore Baths are open all year but closed Friday 9-11AM for cleaning. Burren Junction Bore Baths are open 24 hours but closed during summer. The Salt Caves Picnic Area and Lookout Tower is not advisable on wet roads due to unsealed surfaces.
