Overview
Watarrka National Park protects King's Canyon, one of the Red Centre's most dramatic natural landmarks. The park offers a stark contrast between fiery red cliff walls dropping 300 meters to a hidden oasis, and ancient weathered domes rising from the desert floor.

Before you go
Connectivity
Mobile phone coverage is extremely limited or nonexistent in Watarrka National Park. Inform someone of your plans before entering the area.
Packing
Bring 2-3 liters of water per person for the Rim Walk, wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen with high SPF, sturdy hiking shoes, and warm layers for early morning starts.
Safety
Cliffs are unfenced with 300-meter drops. Dehydration risk is extreme in summer. Emergency phones available at Rim Walk but rescue helicopters are expensive.
Transport
Self-drive is essential—rental cars are available in Alice Springs and Yulara. Fuel up before leaving these towns as prices along the way are significantly higher.
Water
Tap water is safe at King's Canyon Resort. The Garden of Eden waterhole should not be swum in due to bacterial contamination. Bring bottled water for trails.
Weather
Summer temperatures regularly exceed 40°C. Visit between May and September for comfortable hiking weather. Always carry water and start walks early.
