Overview

Waikabubak is the cultural heart of western Sumba, hosting the spectacular Pasola festival each February or March. The surrounding Wanukaka region holds some of Indonesia's most traditional villages, where the Marapu ancestral religion remains strong.

Cash is essential in Waikabubak. ATMs are limited; withdraw in Tambolaka or Waingapu before arrival. Prices quoted are in Indonesian Rupiah (IDR).

Transport

Bemo and ojek are the main local transport. Flag them anywhere on the street. Inter-city travel requires reaching Tambolaka first for buses or flights.

Weather

The best time to visit is during the dry season from April to October. The Pasola festival occurs in February or March.
